Aperiodic Penrose Torus, Alpha

Installation:
Burton Science Center lobby, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts
Dimensions:
67" x 40" x 36"
Weight:
1 ton with base
Materials:
Carnelian Red Granite Torus and pillar, Adacemy Black Granite Tiles

Thick and thin black granite rhombs tile the base, and shape the footprint of the red granite sculpture. Two curves with torus winding numbers (2, 1) and (1, 1) generate rows of a matrix.* The eigenvalues are sufficient to generate coordinates of the rigid aperiodic tile system of Sir Roger Penrose with all seven possible vertex combinations represented.

*The elevated curves and posture of the red granite have antecedents in an ancient Minoan Earth Goddess figurine.

V-neck T-shirts are available from the Smith Department of Mathematics.
